With record setting winter weather hitting much of the United States and Canada, it’s not just important to check the pipes of your home. It’s also crucial to properly winterize your RVs and campers. 

We’ve compiled some useful tips to help you keep your RV in great working order despite rigid temperatures and/or snowfall. 

1. Make sure you drain the water system completely. Pump nontoxic RV antifreeze through the entire water system. Your owner’s manual should also include a checklist for the proper process for your specific make and model. 

2. Remove all food from the inside. You don't want any squirrels or mice chewing through your wiring or any plastic and rubber components on the vehicle. 

3. Defrost the fridge/freezer. You can use baking soda to absorb any unpleasant odors.

4. Clean the exterior thoroughly. This includes resealing or re-caulking any holes or cracks. You'll also want to protect it from the elements.  If you’re storing your RV or camper in an uncovered location, you want to invest in a quality cover designed especially for RVs. Don't just use a tarp.

5. Snow isn’t the only element to worry about during the winter. Any moisture including rain  is a major concern. Accumulated moisture in the vehicle can  lead to mold growth and unpleasant odors when you get your RV out of storage. The best way to keep the interior of the RV dry is to leave the rooftop vents open. You can install special vent covers that will allow you to leave them open all the time with no issues. It’s also helpful to leave open the interior cabinets, closets and prop open the refrigerator door when sorted and not in use.
